Pembukaan Lahan Kelapa Sawit, Orangutan Terancam

Perkebunan kelapa sawit merupakan ancaman utama bagi orangutan.

Kepunahan orangutan karena habitatnya dihancurkan untuk perkebunan sawit bukan lagi rahasia. Memang benar bahwa perkebunan kelapa sawit merupakan ancaman utama bagi orang utan.
Selama ini orangutan menghadapi berbagai kesulitan dalam bertahan hidup. Mulai dari penebangan di habitatnya untuk komersialisasi seperti pembuatan kertas.
Michelle Desilets, executive director di Orangutan Land Trust berpendapat bahwa penebangan hutan untuk kelapa sawit merupakan ancaman terbesar bagi alam liar di Indonesia, Malaysia, dan Papua Nugini.
Namun muncul inisiatif bagi perusahaan perkebunan sawit untuk tidak menanam sawit pada lahan yang dibuka melalui proses deforestasi. Harapannya tindakan itu dapat menyelamatkan satwa liar terutama orang utan.
Sebuah kemajuan selama 11 bulan belakangan ini, bahwa lebih dari 12 perusahaan besar, pedagang, dan konsumen minyak sawit berkomitmen. Mereka berjanji hanya akan memproduksi, membeli, atau menjual minyak sawit dari hutan yang bebas dari deforestasi.
Sehingga sebesar 60 persen perdagangan global harus mengikuti kebijakan kelapa saawit yang ramah lingkungan. Sementara menurut Rhett Butler, pendiri Mongabay.com bahwa perlu komitmen kuat bagi perusahaan kelapa sawit untuk tidak lagi membuka lahan untuk perkebunannya—sebutlah nol deforestasi.
Sekitar 85 persen minyak sawit dunia berasal dari perkebunan di Indonesia dan Malaysia. Menurut data dari Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), sejak tahun 1990 hingga 2010 seluas 8,7 hektare hutan di Indonesia, Malaysia, dan Papua dikonversi untuk perkebunan sawit. Luasnya bahkan dua kali dari wilayah New Jersey di Amerika Serikat.
Minyak kelapa sawit begitu populer pada banyak kalangan karena berbagai alasan. Seperti dapat disimpan lebih lama dan awet, jika dibandingkan dengan minyak nabati lainnya. Selain itu harganya lebih murah dan efisien, bahkan 50 persen buah sawit mengandung minyak hingga pohonnya terus berbuah sepanjang tahun. Maka tak heran banyak perusahaan tertarik untuk membuka lahan demi menanam kepala sawit.

Orangutan dan Kelapa Sawit
“Sebagian besar orangutan akan kelaparan dan mati ketika habitatnya dibuka untuk perkebunan,” ujar Desilets. Akhirnya orangutan akan merambah ke perkebunan yang baru ditanami kelapa sawit dan menghancurkannya. Sehingga tak jarang orangutan dianggap sebagai hama karena menghancurkan tanaman dan membuatnya diburu.
Menangkap dan membunuh orangutan sudah dilarang di Indonesia dan Malaysia. Kenyatannya perburuan terus terjadi. “Serangan terhadap orangutan seringkali brutal,” ujar Desilets. Tim penyelamat sering menemukan orangutan dibantang menggunakan parang, dipukuli hingga mati dengan kayu maupun besi, bahkan dibakar hidup-hidup. Lebih parahnya lagi, anak-anak orangutanpun diperdagangkan secara ilegal.
Saat ini lebih dari 1.200 orangutan dirawat pada pusat-pusat penyelamatan dan sebagian besar dari mereka merupakan korban dari konversi habitat untuk pembukaan lahan kelapa sawit.
Pembukaan lahan untuk kelapa sawit di Kalimantan contohnya, semakin mempermudah orang untuk memburu orangutan. Selain orangutan dianiaya, merekapun menjadi komoditi untuk diperjualbelikan. Sehingga kepunahan sama sekali tidak bisa dihindari.
Ilmuwan dari The Orangutan Land Trust memperkirakan sekitar 3.000 orangutan hilang tiap tahunnya karena konversi habitat dan perburuan. Kini di Kalimantan tersisa 45.000 orangutan saja, sementara di Sumatra lebih parah hanya 6.500 ekor.
Ditambah dengan kebakaran hutan dan gambut yang menimbulkan karbon dioksida membuat orangutan kesulitan bernapas kemudian mati. Sebuah studi tentang emisi gas rumah kaca di Provinsi Riau antara tahun 2000 hingga 2012, bahwa 5,2 juta ton karbon dioksida dihasilkan karena pembakaran lahan gambut.

Komitmen
Perlu komitmen yang tak hanya kuat tapi juga spesifik, termasuk definisi hutan, waktu hingga verivikasi.
Sementara ini sedang dirintis komitmen demi penyelamatan orangutan. “Kami optimis tentnag transparansi, akuntanbilitas, dan penegakan hukum,” papar Rich Zimmerman, executive director Orangutan Outreach. Komitmen juga perlu diperluas. Bukan hanya menjamah perusahaan kelapa sawit tapi juga industri makanan cepat saji.
Komitmen bebas deforestasi merupakan langkah positif, dengan catatan para pelaku terus memegang teguh janjinya. Harapan di masa datang agar lebih banyak perusahaan bergabung untuk melakukan penyelamatan pada alam dan satwa liar, seperti orangutan.
“Komitmen ini harus kuat,” tegas pendiri Mongabay, Butler. Ia juga menambahkan agar LSM bertindak aktif jika mengetahui ada perusahaan melanggar komitmen.
“Kami berharap hubungan antara kepala sawit dengan kepunahan orangutan dapat teratasi,” ujar Desilets.
